Science Curriculum Intent

Subject Leader: Holli Bastable

Date: January 2024

Intent: At Shaftesbury Abbey Primary School we deliver inspiring, engaging science lessons. Lessons, are thoroughly planned, and resourced in order to not just meet the national curriculum, but meet the ever-changing needs of our pupils and the world around us. As one of the core subjects taught in Primary Schools, we aim to give the teaching and learning of Science the prominence it requires.

Implementation: Plans are drawn from the PZAZ scheme of work with additional resources from Hamilton Trust and Twinkl. Teachers cover the science curriculum, choosing what is suitable for their year group and topic depending on the term. Our science teaching offers opportunities for children to:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics;
  • develop the understanding and skills to ‘scientifically enquire’ about a range of subjects within science;
  • enable children to work across all four areas of scientific enquiry, identifying patterns (grouping and classification), observing changes over time, fair testing, research using a secondary source.
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of Science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them; this will be linked, where possible to the cluster programme document ‘amazing trails’
  • be equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of Science, today and for the future.
  • use a range of methods to communicate their scientific information and present it in a systematic, scientific manner, including I.C.T., diagrams, graphs and charts.
  • develop a respect for the materials and equipment they handle with regard to their own, and other children’s safety.
  • develop an enthusiasm and enjoyment of scientific learning and discovery.

Impact: We use a variety of strategies to evaluate the knowledge, skills and understanding that our children have gained during each unit.

  • CPD to ensure that teacher pedagogy and assessment is secure.
  • Regular feedback, marking and pupil voice feedback.
  • Subject monitoring, including book scrutiny and staff meetings to check planning.
  • End of unit PZAZ assessments which are inputted onto Sharepoint.
