Statement of intent
PSHCE At the Abbey Primary
At The Abbey we run our PSHCE teaching through the Jigsaw Approach. A scheme of work for ages 5-11. The programme integrates a personal and social health education (Health and wellbeing) curriculum giving relevant context to build skills attitudes self esteem resilience and confidence that is taught explicitly as well as nurtured implicitly. It is taught week to week through progressive planned lessons. All children have their own Jigsaw journals allowing them to record their thoughts and feelings, responding to the topic in different ways, such as art, drama and debates.
It is a whole school approach with assemblies, weekly celebrations music and songs to reinforce the curriculum work and to enhance the positive ethos of the school. Each year the children revisit topics building on this year on year. The Jigsaw charter is shown and discussed. The children are made aware that what is discussed is in a safe and open space.
Through this scheme the children are at the heart of the programme and are able to develop their social and emotional well-being. It also allows the children to develop the foundations needed in the wider world, to help support their emotional well-being and metal health enhancing their life chances.
